Urgent Action Alert: Funding for Nonprofits Needed in COVID-19 Stimulus Bill

If you have not followed the story closely (and we can well understand why that might be), you should know that a coronavirus stimulus package underway on Capitol Hill. While there is pressure to move quickly, as capacity builders, we must ensure that our nonprofit organizations and workforce can tap into the same supports as for-profit corporations.

The charitable nonprofit community has sent a very strong package of policy solutions that would address the immediate needs of organizations and the people they serve. You can read the letter here.

Key provisions that the nonprofit sector is rallying around include:

  • explicit nonprofit eligibility for emergency funding of $60B,
  • improvements to the above-the-line charitable deduction (a petition you can sign onto is here),
  • nonprofit eligibility in small business loan programs (specifics here).

With so much at stake, we strongly urge you to write your US Senators and Representatives by clicking those links to  find your officeholders. Tweeting is easy too and you can find your Senator’s or Representatives Twitter handles here.

The message is simple: “I want you to understand what this pandemic is doing to the ability of the nonprofits I work with and their ability to serve their clients and your constituents.” To help these electeds understand the true impact, tell a story about an organization or two you serve. Close with something like, “I urge you to include the policy solutions proposed by the nonprofit community in any COVID-19 relief and stimulus legislation.”
