Advancing Racial Equity Focus in New York
Friday, April 27, 2018
Achieving Racial Equity is more than just the theme of this year’s Capacity Builders Conference. It is a goal and a major focus of the research and training being supported by the Alliance for Nonprofit Management. As part of part of this emphasis, on April 13, the Alliance had the opportunity to partner with the Support Center to facilitate a one-day program in New York, sponsored by the New York City Department of Youth and Family Development. With a day-long theme focusing on “The Implications of Racial Equity in Capacity Building,” the event brought together 50 participants including funders, consultants and non-profit staff for an intensive look into racial equity.
Topics explored by the group included Developing a Common Language and Understanding Levels of Racism; Perspectives on Racial Equity Capacity Building; Integrating a Racial Equity Lens in Capacity Building Work; and more. Each participant also had the opportunity to develop a personal learning and action plan so that the learning and momentum will continue.
Overall, the day’s events – including speakers, panelists, table discussions and more – created energy and ideas that will help participants keep racial equity at the forefront of their practice. In the words of one participant, "Today was great. The quality of the content, facilitation and interaction was excellent. I learned a lot, thought a lot, got to share a lot, met some great people and walked away feeling like my expertise as a consultant moved up a notch."
Facilitators included Alliance Board Member Curdina Hill and Governance Affinity Group Chair Judy Freiwirth, as well as Alliance Managing Director Marissa Q. Paine. The day included remarks from Miguel Bonilla, Senior Director of Capacity Building for the New York City Department of Youth and Family Development and a Keynote Panel Discussion featuring Mary Pender Greene from MPG Consulting, Tiloma Jayasinghe from the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York, and Brigid Lang of Grace Institute.
